Beauty and Skincare Video Production in Los Angeles

How beauty and skincare brands get campaign film, product macro, and social cutdowns out of a single Los Angeles shoot day, and what to look for in a production partner.

Beauty and skincare is one of the hardest categories to shoot well. The product is small, reflective, and often transparent. The texture matters more than the packaging. And the same shoot has to feed a hero campaign film, a shelf of product macro shots, and a month of vertical social cutdowns.

Posted is a production company based in West Hollywood. We have produced video work for beauty and fashion brands including Lashify and Guess?, alongside campaign work for Red Bull, Comedy Central, iHeartRadio, Sony Music, Harmless Harvest, and Hotels.com.

What beauty brands are actually buying

Most beauty and skincare briefs land in one of four buckets:

  • Campaign film. The brand-level piece. Talent, wardrobe, art direction, a controlled set or a location that carries the mood.
  • Product macro. Extreme close work on texture, pour, swatch, and applicator. This is a lighting and lens problem, not a talent problem.
  • Founder and education. The founder or an expert explaining formulation, ingredients, or how to use the product. Cheap to shoot, disproportionately effective on paid social.
  • Social cutdowns. Vertical 9:16 assets built for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts, plus paid variants with different hooks.

The mistake we see most often is buying these as four separate projects. Shot in the right order on the right stage, they are one production.

The single-day structure that works

A beauty day that has to deliver all four usually runs like this:

  1. Macro block first, before talent call time. The camera is locked, the product is clean, and nobody is waiting. Pours, swatches, and texture happen while the set is quiet.
  2. Talent beauty block. Hero campaign coverage with the full lighting setup, shot wide enough to crop vertical later.
  3. Founder or expert block. Same set, minimal relight, interview coverage plus B-roll of the product in hand.
  4. Vertical block at the end. Deliberately shot 9:16, not cropped from a 16:9 master. Multiple hooks for the same body so paid media has something to test.

Shooting vertical natively is the single biggest quality difference between beauty content that performs and beauty content that looks reformatted.

What makes beauty different technically

  • Reflections. Glass, foil, and gloss pick up every light and every crew member. Beauty sets need flags, tents, and patience more than they need more fixtures.
  • Texture at scale. Probe and macro lenses reveal what a normal lens flattens. Cream, serum, and balm read completely differently at 2:1 magnification.
  • Skin. Color science and lighting decide whether skin reads as real. This is where an experienced DP earns their day rate.
  • Continuity of product state. A swatch dries, a cream separates, ice melts. Beauty shoots run product resets constantly, which is why a dedicated product stylist is worth the line item.

What to look for in a Los Angeles partner

Ask any shop you are considering for these four things:

  • Macro reel, not just campaign reel. Anyone can light a face. Ask specifically to see pour and texture work.
  • A named DP and product stylist. Not "our team," actual people whose work you can look at.
  • A vertical-native example. Something shot 9:16 on purpose.
  • Insurance and permitting practice. A certificate of insurance naming your brand and, when shooting outside a stage, a FilmLA permit. Any legitimate LA production company handles both without being asked. See our guide on filming in Los Angeles.

Where beauty shoots happen in LA

Stages in West Hollywood, Hollywood, and Culver City cover most controlled beauty work. Location days lean on Malibu and the canyons for daylight and skin tones, and on DTLA for harder editorial looks. Our filming locations guide breaks down the tradeoffs.

How we scope a beauty project

Send the product, the launch date, and where the assets will run. We come back with the shot list split by block, the crew, the stage or location, and a schedule. If the brief is really a paid-social volume problem rather than a campaign problem, we will say so and scope a batch day instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a beauty or skincare video shoot take?

Most beauty projects that need campaign film, product macro, and social cutdowns fit into a single well-planned stage day. Multi-talent campaigns or multi-SKU launches usually run two days.

Can one shoot cover both campaign film and TikTok content?

Yes, if it is planned that way. The vertical assets should be shot natively in 9:16 as their own block rather than cropped out of the widescreen master, which is what keeps social content from looking reformatted.

Do you shoot product macro and texture work in-house?

Yes. Macro, pour, and swatch coverage is shot with probe and macro lenses on a controlled set, typically before talent call time so the set stays clean and quiet.

Do you provide a certificate of insurance for beauty brands?

Yes. We carry production insurance and issue certificates naming the brand and the location, and we pull FilmLA permits for any location work in the city.

Where are you based?
